SPAIN. Gold 4 Escudos, 1700. Charles II. Crowned Habsburg Shield Reverse.
_Only example certified by PCGS or NGC._

A singular survivor in every sense--this is the only known example of a 1700-dated Spain 4 Escudos graded by PCGS, and there's only 1 graded by NGC, making it an elite prize among Charles II-era gold. Struck with exceptional care and preserved with striking clarity, this piece transcends typical cob coinage of the period, boasting not only a rare date but also a truly distinguished state of preservation.

This 4 Escudos features the Cross of Jerusalem—rendered in superb detail without any of the central softness that so often plagues Spanish colonial gold. The reverse presents the majestic crowned Habsburg shield, symbolizing the imperial arms of Spain’s far-flung empire. Remarkably, the full date “1700” and the royal crown—features commonly lost to off-center strikes or clipped flans—are completely intact, thanks to incredible centering and a razor-sharp strike throughout. Every element of the design is articulate and confident, from the crisp inner borders to the legend “CAROLVS II DEI GRAT” encircling the obverse.

But this coin is not only rare and beautiful—it is historically monumental.
The year 1700 was a hinge point in European history. When Charles II—last of the Spanish Habsburgs—died without an heir, he triggered the greatest international crisis of the early 18th century. Physically frail and politically manipulated for much of his reign, Charles had presided over an empire in decline: Spain had lost much of its influence in Europe, its treasury was depleted, and its American colonies were increasingly difficult to manage. Yet the wealth of the Indies still flowed—gold like this piece, extracted from New World mines under the brutal encomienda and repartimiento systems, continued to underpin royal finances and geopolitical ambition.

Charles’s will named Philip of Anjou, grandson of France’s Louis XIV, as his successor—a decision that horrified rival European powers and ignited the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714). The survival of this coin--struck in the twilight of the Habsburg dynasty—offers a direct link to this turbulent moment of dynastic upheaval and shifting imperial power.

Today, few coins can so perfectly encapsulate the ending of one era and the bloody birth of another. The only graded example from this date, flawlessly centered, impressively struck, and heavy with imperial legacy—this 1700 4 Escudos stands as a testament to both the artistry of Spanish colonial mints and the seismic geopolitical events of its time.1
