Recovered from the legendary wreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha

Struck at the Potosí mint under the reign of Philip III of Spain, this 8 Reales silver cob is a stunning survivor of both time and tragedy. With a massive flan, deeply struck details, and a fully visible date of 1617, this specimen ranks among the most desirable of the shipwreck-grade cobs recovered from the famed Spanish galleon Atocha. The cross and shield are crisp, and the overall preservation—remarkable for a sea-recovered artifact—earns its rightful Grade 1 designation.

A Coin From a Sunken Empire
The Nuestra Señora de Atocha was no ordinary ship. She served as the Almiranta (rear guard flagship) of the Tierra Firme Fleet, Spain’s principal treasure fleet returning from the New World. Laden with staggering wealth—both declared and smuggled—the Atocha represented the very lifeblood of Spain’s imperial ambitions. On September 4, 1622, mere days after departing Havana, the fleet was struck by a devastating hurricane in the Florida Straits. The Atocha was driven onto the coral reefs of the Keys and torn apart by the storm, sinking with nearly her entire cargo and crew.

The Spanish launched frantic salvage efforts, but the galleon had come to rest in deep waters. Only five survivors remained, clinging to the sterncastle. Over the next decades, hurricanes scattered the treasure even further, and for centuries the Atocha became a ghost of maritime lore—whispered about, but never seen.

The Hunt That Changed History
In the late 20th century, Mel Fisher, a modern-day Odysseus, began what would become a 16-year odyssey to locate the wreck. Funded by loyal investors and powered by relentless determination, Fisher and his team slowly closed in on their white whale. By 1973, the discovery of three silver bars—documented on the original 1622 cargo manifest—confirmed they were on the right trail. The full wreck of the Santa Margarita, a sister ship, was found in 1980, bringing hope and riches. But it wasn’t until July 20, 1985, that the ultimate breakthrough came: divers found a “reef of silver bars” on the seafloor. The motherlode of the Atocha had finally been discovered.

Among the recovered artifacts were over 40 tons of silver and gold, including 180,000 silver coins, gold ingots, emeralds, jewelry, weapons, and religious items. This discovery is considered one of the greatest treasure finds in human history, and many of the coins—such as the present piece—were distributed to investors, museums, and collectors, each now a relic of both imperial ambition and human perseverance.

A Crown Jewel of the Deep
This 1617 8 Reales cob is not just currency; it is a historical time capsule. Its date marks it as a product of a specific moment in Habsburg Spain, when silver flowed from the Andes to the Old World, sustaining wars, building empires, and reshaping global trade. Recovered from the very wreck that carried this wealth, and preserved in excellent condition, this coin bridges the world of conquest and catastrophe.

Owning a coin like this is not merely owning treasure—it is holding the very silver that once bankrolled a global empire, lost for over 360 years beneath the waves and now, miraculously, reborn.
