In July 2013, treasure hunters made a remarkable discovery from the 1715 Fleet shipwreck site off the coast of Florida. A group of 51 gold 1 escudo coins, known as the "2013 One Escudo Pile," was found in a small crack in the limestone bedrock near the Corrigans wreck site. This discovery is significant for several reasons:
Rarity: One escudo coins are very rare finds from the 1715 Fleet shipwrecks. Discovering 51 of them in a single location is exceptionally uncommon. Minting origins: The coins were struck under the reigns of both Charles II (1665-1700) and Philip V (1700-1746), and were produced at mints in Mexico City, Colombia, and Peru.
Provenance: Unlike many 1715 Fleet coins whose exact discovery locations have been lost to time, the provenance of these coins is well-documented. The precise site (Corrigans), date of discovery (July 17, 2013), and the finders (crew of S/V Capitana) are all known.
Mint rarity: According to the State of Florida Research Coin Collection, most gold cobs recovered from the 1715 Fleet were minted in Mexico City. Less than 8% were minted in Bogota, Colombia. Of that 8%, only 12% were 1 escudo coins, making coins like those in this pile extremely rare.
Historical significance: The discovery occurred just two years before the 300th anniversary of the 1715 Fleet's sinking, adding to its historical importance.
Media attention: The story of this find was reported worldwide, highlighting the ongoing fascination with shipwreck treasures.
The discovery of the "2013 One Escudo Pile" demonstrates that even after centuries of searching, the 1715 Fleet shipwreck sites continue to yield valuable artifacts, providing insights into the maritime history of the Spanish colonial era and the wealth that was transported across the Atlantic during this period.
